Leida Tolentino

SEDL Spotlight Leida Tolentino

Recently hired on full-time—and likely relieved to give up some of the extra jobs she's been juggling—Leida Tolentino is enriching the Austin office's third floor with her energy and cultural heritage. Read on to get to know more about her.

Q. How did you come to take a job at SEDL?

A. It wasn't easy. ☺ I had applied for a few positions at SEDL but had not been selected for an interview until last October when Zena Rudo contacted me asking whether I wanted to be considered for a part-time research assistant vacancy. Obviously I did, and the interview went very well! In February 2012, I became a full-time SEDL research specialist.

Q. What do you love about where you live?

A. The colorful neighborhood coffee shops.

Q. Do you have any interesting or unusual hobbies?

A. I suppose West African dance is my most interesting, and perhaps unusual, hobby. For about a decade now, I have been fortunate to learn from talented and incredibly knowledgeable artists, mainly from Mali, Senegal, and Guinea. I now teach adult classes and perform with an Austin-based troupe named Lannaya. West African dance is about rhythm, tradition, and community, and it is tremendously addictive!

Q. What's something a lot of your coworkers don't know about you?

A. Some may know where I am from originally, but they may not be able to point to it on a map—the Cape Verde Islands. Until I was 18 years old, I lived in this tropical 10-island archipelago, about 500 miles off the west coast of Africa. Our native languages are Portuguese and Capeverdean (creole)—and we have great music, as some SEDL employees will attest!

Q. What do you like best about your job?

A. I like the fact that I work for an educational research nonprofit organization, as I believe in the transformational power of education and research-based policy. Both benefit all of us as a society. I also like the fact that my job provides great learning opportunities, nice coworkers, and fragrant morning coffee.
